In the early 1990s, I was the DOM Guy for the Electronic Graphic Artists of Dallas (EGAD), a Macintosh Users Group. I'd show up at meetings with a floppy, full of fonts (very popular), utilities and other programs, which I'd sell for a dollar.
This page is a continuation of that service and a way to share what I find. I am in no way affiliated with who makes this stuff. I'm just a user. I will take suggestions for other Mac utilities and list those on another page, but if it's here, I know it's good, because I use it.

FileType 1.0.1 still works in OS-X.4. It lets us change file types. I use it to change image files so Pshop opens them without dragging, just clicking.

Blackhole Media has 4 freebie applications on a very simple site. The one I understand and use is Noise, which makes white noise and has a volume slider. Noise's noise blocks out other noises. It's simple, direct, intuitive, free and tiny.

Rogue Amoeba's Audio Hijack Pro lets you record any audio, especially System Audio to MP3, AAC, ALAC or AIFF. I use it to record FM radio via Griffin's RadioShark and music on the web. If your Mac can play it, Audio Hijack Pro can record it. One-click recording of Skype, iChat and Gizmo conversations or to import cassettes and vinyl records into iTunes.

Rogue Amoeba's Fission is an "audio editor designed with simplicity in mind. Using Fission, you can quickly and easily trim and split MP3, AAC, Apple Lossless and AIFF files, with no quality loss. Cut one large audio file into multiple files, or to remove sections of audio from a file."

Unsanity's Fruit Menu is "a haxie that [lets us] customize the Apple Menu and contextual menus" so we can put any file or folder or Apple Service (sleep, shut down, force quit) we want under the Apple Menu, where they look and act like the old Apple Menu Items.

Unsanity's Labels X is like OS 9's Labels, only you can blot color over the whole line in OS X or just the icon, which is so much less ugly to look at.

Unsanity's WindowShade X lets us double-click the title bar of any window so only the title bar shows on the desktop, just like OS 9.

Unsanity's Cee Pee You "is a Menu Extra updated every second that displays CPU(s) load in the menu bar" in OS Xs to 10.4. I forgot this was another Unsanity product. It lets me know when I've got too many programs going. When there's trouble, it's usually the browser.

The font used for the DOM logo is Kiwi Media's Morpheus, a second-cousin remix of an Emigre's font that originated as Manson (Charlie), then they chickened out and called it Mason. Spooky distinctive. I've seen it in ads and movies. free created by http://www.kiwi-media.com/ now avilable from http://www.dafont.com/morpheus.font J R Compton was the DOM-guy and board member for EGAD and does a couple of other sites. Way last century, he published Fontaholics Anonymous online. |
