In the last few years, I have more often photographed dying flowers than vibrant live ones. It might be related to my age. This time, I missed the early part, when the flowers were lithe and lively. Maybe next time I'll follow the whole process from fresh to beyond dead, but I didn't really start till these guys acquired their deathly pallor, which arrived fast — maybe why they were cheap. Then it started getting exciting.
I've been posting new shots once or twice a day on my Facebook wall, and I'm putting the whole collection here. Each shot is selected from dozens that weren't as good, as sharp or as something, then I pretty much amaze myself with one that may be worth posting, although toward the end I'm grasping straws. They're in my usual strict chronological order. Down to Ballerinos, the progression is obvious. After that, it's the next one and the one after that.
Last month's daisies are near the end of their transformation. Their shapes will maintain — although they'd be easy to crush — but after six months or so, not much will remain of their color. The five disheveing daisies are now ensconced in wood boxes, like my other elder flowers, so we'll just have to wait and see what — if anything — happens.
I can't imagine what else there might be to photograph, but I'm too jazzed to give up yet.
My Dead Flowers Index links more dead flowers over the years.
