Dead Coot Bust As Hippie Cavalryman
Not sure what I'm learning about this coot from photographs of it dead. But the the opportunity to photograph its feet was worth the mild dyspepsia — and the hassle of turning my dining room into an temporary ersatz photo studio.
I have never got this close to a live coot.
Turned out, some of these shots have more to do with art than biology. But that's what happens, I guess, when a photographer who fancies himself an artist, photographs strange new subjects he finds fascinating. Perhaps I should note that this bird was stiff (full rigor mortis), and that I did not alter its body in any way for these photographs. I didn't even move a feather. Nothing I could do, actually. I usually handled it by its legs.
The bird is gone now.
