Great Egret on the Steps of the Spillway

Didn't go out today, except to get the mail off the front porch. Anna said it was hot. I didn't notice, had too much to do I've already procrastinated. I've been clearing out dupes and bad shots in old (last week) folders and came upon these, which I first characterized as the same old pix. With this second viewing, however, I see they're not terrible. Better, probably, of the water than the birds, but interesting, but not great.

Snowy Egret vs. Great Egret

I remember thinking when I shot this that it was comparison of the smaller Snowy Egret on the left and the larger and more common Great Egret on the right. In fact, I may post this picture on my Egrets Page, just to show the differences between these two species.

Too bad you can't see their feet. That'd make the comparison significantly better. Snowies, who have orange feet, often show off their crown of silken white feathers. They are about half as high as Greats, who have big, black feet. Snowies have black beaks forward of their orange lores (area around their eyes), and Greats usually have even longer orange beaks and lores.

Sometimes — in mating season — parts of Greats (I've seen them)' beaks turn green and dark blue toward black.
